A Birthday Audio Play...

Postby dooglio » Mon May 17, 2010 11:13 pm

Hi all,

My wife had a birthday recently and I wanted to give her a memorable birthday present. Just some background--I usually read to her every night, putting in nifty character voices and what not as the story calls. I read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy to her, then followed up with the Hobbit (we tried the "The Similarion" but it was a bit harder for us to get into). Also, I've read the entire Harry Potter book series to her as well in this gradual manner. On top of all of it, there are certain sci-fi shows and movies we like to watch as well. So I got an idea.

I took characters from some of our favorite stories and threw them together into an audio play. Featured are vocal actors I've worked with in the past (plus ones that I've just plainly admired) in addition to members of our vocal ensemble (The Vocal Art Ensemble: http://www.vae.trug.com/), dear friends of hers, who play in their own respective groups. And I managed to sneak around well enough where she didn't know I was doing this for her--it was a total surprise!

Anyway, my version of the Doctor appears (along with Charlie Hawkins--not quite cannon I realize, but fun nonetheless) near the end of the production, so you all can get a sneak peek of what he will be like. I thought I would share this tidbit (with Lighthope's permission and blessing of course) and I hope you all enjoy it!!!!

That was...interesting. :D

Reminded me a bit of Dimensions in Time, both with Charlie being paried with a different Doctor, and also with all the different bits from different things mixed together that it made me dizzy!

I think what is most interesting is the Doctor himself. Advertised as a "sneak peak", I am intrigued and maybe a little frightened of him. He seems a bit sharp, angry. He has a bit of an ego to him like the DeNatale Doctor, but there is a gentlelness that seems missing. I'm not going to pass any judgements on this new Doctor...if indeed this is what he is going to be like...on only a couple minutes experience, especially an "unofficial" appearance. But I admit that I am kind of wondering about him...

Spooky, I thought the new Doctor would be like Supreme Dalek's description... Oh dear. I hope that when I can listen to this the Doctor isn't too, erm... abrasive?

Actually having listened to it... The new Doctor is an @$$hole. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear... Why? :(

EDIT: After a few listens, I say that I like the new Doctor. He may be rather harsh, but he still has that innate likability about him... Hm... Interesting. :)

I agree the New Doctor isn't exactly endearing. Every word is a sneer that drips with contempt, he has no apparent interest in anyone or anything, bites people's heads off and seems unable to pronounce "TARDIS" properly (it's not meant to rhyme with "geese"!). He doesn't seem the sort to save the universe, more sort of stay in his room sulking and whining about how he hates everything and everyone. As a sinister and miserable creep, I'd have to say the "Codger" Doctor is not making me eager to lose JK Flynn any time soon. To be honest, I don't think anyone would complain if - during his rant at Charlie about how disgusting booze is - tripped over, broke his neck and regenerated into someone less horrible. Lock yourself in that hidden TARDIS room, say I, we'll be better off without you...

That said, the actual audio play was very good. 9.5/10

Thanks Chimera.

I think I may not be the best person to say this, because I'm so close to the character, but for those who think the new Doctor won't be any fun...please give him a chance! :-) Keep in mind this audio play I did represents a very small preview of the Doctor. Suspend your judgement until we really get into his era. If you still hate him then, well my apologies. :D

Chamber: I'm glad you liked the audio play. It was fun to work on! And thanks for listening!

I think everyone will be very pleased with the new Doctor. What you heard in Doug's play was just "fan work" and shouldn't be taken as canon in any sense of the word.

As script editor, I have a good grasp of what is going on and I can tell you the new Doctor will be just as endearing as he has always been, no matter what form he takes. :)

Exactly. This was my take on the doctor, having read just a small snippet for audition and read the bio. It is not as Shannon says "canon."

Well, I'll take your word for it.

And it's pronounced "tar diss" not "tard ease". ;)
